Service

Some clear positives about volunteering include the fact that someone is receiving help that they want or need. As well as that, volunteering is capable of making the volunteer more aware of the ways others live because in many cases, the volunteer is someone who has plenty. Someone's vision of the world can become cloudy as they are surrounded with their sufficient lifestyle so volunteering is a good reminder that not everyone lives the way they do. Some negatives to volunteering can include the amount of time it takes to volunteer. In my experience, a lot of time is necessary to make a lasting effect with what you are volunteering for so to want to volunteer, but to not put in enough time could leave little effect on what you are doing. Nothing much out of the lecture surprised me.

In high school, I spent nearly all of my service hours volunteering at a flag football league where I would assist the league owners in managing the flow of games and the setup and tear down of the fields. Most of the time, there were only an additional couple of people to assist with these tasks so many times I was needed there whether I had the spare time or not. In order for these tasks to be performed for effectively, more people would have been needed plain and simple. However, I do still believe that is was beneficial for the community because without the help that I gave, no one else would have been there to do it. Ultimately, every week I was able to prepare some fields so that little kids could enjoy some football on a Sunday and that in itself was rewarding to me.

  1. Your example of service is a really good one, imho. I think people would be happier in general if they worked to serve on things they personally care about, instead of causes that are popularly known to be "good." In the words of Plato "What is good? And what is not good? Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?"

  2. Billy G,
This was a great post! It was a good point to make that sometimes that biggest beneficiaries of service are those that serve. Service is one of those things that benefits everyone involved and works towards a greater good. Also, i commend you on your flag football league service. You're a champion for all those who serve!Go get'em tiger!!
